Vertebroplasty

Many people suffer from a condition known as osteoporosis. This leads to weakening of the bones. As the bones in the vertebrae (spine) become weak and brittle, they may be susceptible to collapse, known as a compression fracture. Sometimes, even the smallest activity can cause this fracture, such as coughing. The collapsed vertebra may be extreme and can lead to considerable disability, which limits the possibility of normal movement or simple activities. These fractures can actually increase the risks of premature death.

In the past, people who had these types of fractures had three options: pain medications, bed rest and external bracing. While these conservative options are still the first choice for reducing discomfort, if severe pain persists, patients can now be referred to The Spine and Pain Center of San Antonio, where a specially trained physician will evaluate them to see if Vertebroplasty will work for them.

Immediate Pain Relief-Minimally Invasive

Vertebroplasty works by stabilizing the collapsed vertebra using a specially formulated acrylic bone cement. It's done as an outpatient procedure-no hospitalization, no surgery-and requires only a local anesthetic. Once the area of the spine is numb, Dr. Karasek inserts one or two needles through a small incision. He then injects a small amount of this bone cement into the fracture. This stabilizes the fracture. Most patients experience pain relief within hours. Best of all, patients are able to resume their daily activities within 48 hours.
