An Electrodiagnostic test (EMG/NCS) is composed of 2 parts:
• The first part is the nerve conduction study (NCS). This will evaluate how well the nerves are sending signals to each other.
• The second part is the electromyography (EMG). This will evaluate the muscles which the nerves supply.
Your doctor may order an EMG/NCS as a test to evaluate for potential nerve injury, pain syndromes, neurologic problems or muscle problems.
The NCS test will feel like an electrical impulse. The EMG portion will use a small needle to evaluate the muscles.
The test usually will take between 30 to 60 minutes. Please ensure that you arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment. A report will be sent to you referring physician with the results. If any other questions arise, please Contact Us prior to your appointment.
Surgery Prep
Please let your doctor know if you are on Coumadin (warfarin) or Plavix (clopidegral) as these should be stopped prior to the EMG if prescribed by the doctor. Otherwise you can continue on all your medications.
In addition, let your doctor know if you have a pacemaker. Discontinue use of any lotions the day of the procedure. Minimize the amount of rings and bracelets that are worn, as these will need to be removed.
